Outside, Alex saw kids scatter like a ﬂock of 34 ALEX AND THE HOBO sheep. The ones who lived in town had only a short walk home, and those who lived farther had to wait until the dances were over to ﬁnd their rides. Alex felt sorry for the kids who lived out of town, and he noticed that every bar and dance hall was in full swing, spewing music into the street. He saw some kids going from place to place, looking in through the big plate glass windows of the bars and dance halls searching for the person who could drive them home.
Endless balls of tumbleweed rolled down the street, snagging in doorways and under parked cars. ” asked the boy, with a worried look on his face. “No, but it sure seems like it,” his father patiently explained. ” “Oh, I’m sure it will, Alex. ” A lone man fought his way through the back alley and on to Main Street not far from where Alex stood watching from the window. The man faced his head into the wind and tried to walk, but tumbleweed snagged his feet. He stumbled, nearly fell, and struggled to regain his footing only to feel the wind tear a sack from his grasp and carry it down the street.
Alex peeked in but could not make out anyone at ﬁrst. Then his eyes adjusted to the faint light, and he saw the outline of two people sitting very close together on a couch.
